Out of The Hat

Making the Ordinary, Extraordinary

About This Blog

The Great Zambini is a general lifestyle blog, though there is a definite focus on green living, recycling, and organization. And cheap, don`t forget the cheap! I`m the person that gets a little aggravated when a blog is proclaiming ‘best picks under $100’ as a budget find. I`m thinking more like free, or at least under five bucks. Like I said, I`m cheap.

Mainly I use materials that people aren`t supposed to use, make stuff that I`m not supposed to make, and generally think outside of the box. I kind of like thinking outside of the box. It confuses mimes everywhere.

About Me

In case you were curious, because this is a kind of abstract name, I am, in fact, a girl. Or a woman. Let`s just leave it at female. Does that work for you? And since I am the great Zambini, that means there is an all girl staff at this here blog. I`m working through college, so I make a lot of pretty stuff with free materials, and I thought there must be other people who want free and pretty stuff. So here it is!

I do a lot of different styles of writing, even on my blog, so don`t be surprised to see poems, riddles, and even some scripts here. I`m just that kind of scatterbrained and multi-talented person :)

In case the name made you curious, I am not a magician. I`m terrible at card tricks, and things fall out of my sleeves when I try to do anything magicky. I leave that to the experts. But, I think it`s pretty magical how I transform basic stuff into cool treasures, so there you have it.

Stay Connected

Follow the Great Zambini on my Gravatar for the latest info on how we can stay in touch. As of January 14th, I have a Gravitar profile, a wordpress blog, and a twitter account.  All of them are under the name The Great Zambini. If you look at the sidebar to the right, you should also be able to follow my posts through email. If you have any problems, please let me know right away!  I am actually just started my Pinterest account in March, so it`s not the most complete site, but it`s not bad either. I just need a few more photos to get it looking all professional :)

 My (Very Infrequent) Contributor

The magical mother of mine, known as Frugal Frau (yes, she picked out her alias. It kind of bummed me out, because I wanted to give her a whacky name of my own thinking. How about Petra Von Shamrock? anyone? Hmm, maybe mother does know best, or at least when it comes to name choice!)

The amazing Frugal Frau is a contributing writer at The Great Zambini. A would be empty nester, she currently has two college students bumming out at home, one off in a dorm, and a husband besides. She does not have a dog or other pet, but she is taking care of the dorm living (That`s the other one, I`m the bum-at-home) daughter`s fish. Neither of them particularly love each other, but he wags his tail for her at meal time and she feeds him and makes kissy noises and lovey dovey talking, so I figure they must get along pretty well.

About Frugal Frau

She has practice whipping her home into shape as a stay at home mother, and the last decade or so out in the work force trying to maintain the same standards of nutrition, cleanliness, and organization in her home. She has recently made her home gluten free, except some prized foods of her gluten-full husband. She experiments with making food that will fit each family member’s sensitivities and tastes, and tries to do some fun crafting, sewing, and dreaming up preteen books that she will probably never actually write and publish.

She is constantly embarrassing me with her public displays of Star Trek fandom and Lego building obsession, but she is willing to go to the ballet with me and occasionally faces hated (by her, never me) shopping. We both enjoy gardening and reading, so we rub shoulders rather well. That, and she pays my tuition and utilities, and who doesn`t love that?

Meet The Family

Well, I`ve mentioned Frugal Frau and myself, Zambini (The Great).  The Frau is married to Treeman, the dad of the family. They had three kids, including Zambini (that`s me, folks!), DormGirl- so called because though all of the children are in college, she`s the one living off in a dorm; and ShockBoy, so called because he loves studying abnormal psychology, which sometimes includes the shocking stories of Hollywood.

There are no cats, as the Frau and ShockBoy are allergic. No dogs, as our yard is small and wouldn`t be fair for one (or at least that`s what I`ve been told every time I begged for one!). There are no guinea pigs, as my first one, Gigi, died tragically of pneumonia the year I got her, and her mother Markers died of a combination of extreme old age (9 years old!) and shock as the East Coast earthquake hit us. I know it wouldn`t seem like a big deal to those that don`t live here, just as three inches of freak snow in the heart of Texas would seem like no big deal to New Yorkers. But it was a big deal to an old guinea pig, at least. In my defense of their deaths, I got them after they were rescued from a guinea pig ‘farm’. They were all stuck in a tub, male and female, and left to fend for themselves except for food. I`m so proud they survived that at all!

Meet The Gadgets

I love my little tech toys. It`s actually pretty ironic, because in the past I`ve always hated technology. I guess when it`s this cool, even I have to love it!

My first little tech toy was my laptop. It`s a big long in the tooth, to tell the truth. I think it`s four years old now? Or maybe five? Either way, the lid is a pretty blue, so I`m fine with it. It has no name, because it`s a hand me down. If I had gotten it new, I promise I would have named it.

I also have a pink camera named Phyliss. We just call her Phyl for short. I`m not really sure what her specs are, or any information that is actually useful on her. I can tell you she is very loyal and has always worked for me, except for her stint in January where she broke up with her charger and USB cord- permanently. Hard to use a camera with no charge.

I have a Nook. Her name is Ruby, because she will soon have a bright red case. As soon as I can scrape up the money for it, that is! In the meantime, her name is still Ruby. I kind of have a huge tech crush on Ruby, because it feels like she can do anything! I actually do a lot of stuff for the blog through Ruby, in case you were wondering.

I have a phone. It`s not really a modern phone, it is basically an original model Blackberry. Not that exciting, and I just thought I should mention the fact that it does not get used for the blog.

As a matter of fact, I`m not. I found the sign up took effort, and it really wasn`t necessary. There`s a very vibrant and active Craigslist community around here, and all kinds of really good stuff shows up for free. For example, I got a (new) Bosch dishwasher for free, because the people who owned it got a new color scheme in their kitchen. Stuff like that happens all of the time. It`s crazy, but I benefit a lot from it!

ooh i love your blog! I am also a casual geek – atm Im into Star Trek:TNG – really looking forward to watching season 5. Haven’t seen the Hobbit yet cos live in the country where cinemas are like an old projector and a few wooden stools. Waiting for the DVD to enjoy the film in the luxuries of home.

I haven`t actually seen the latest incarnation of Start Trek at all! I saw the original season (I was hog tied down and couldn`t avoid it) and the 80`s version (I decided Sci Fi may not be the worst thing ever invented after watching the original), but I really don`t watch television that much in general. I`m rather proud that my geekiness is usually limited more to books than what I watch, both in Sci Fi and Manga geekiness!

I’m sorry I didn’t notice your posts… I like your mirror, it’s nice. It’s a pity you don’t have a picture of the room divider too.. And I’m happy that I am inspiring someone else, thank you! You are inspiring me as well to try to do something with cardboard!

I love that you name your gadgets. I do the same. My iPod’s name is Skippy. I also have a Nook tablet (that I adore more than should be allowable) and his name is Fred. :)
